Dear Parents,


We need your help!


Castlebay’s top academic priorities are to provide students with opportunities to engage in rigor, creativity, innovation, and collaboration.   This year in support of our STEAM curriculum and vision, our school will be participating in a special kind of science fair called the Invention Convention. It is designed to promote your child's problem-solving and creative-thinking skills and addresses standards across multiple disciplines, including literacy, science,  engineering, language arts, mathematics, and potentially art. It also clearly addresses the ISTE Standards for Students, as students collaborate on creative solutions to problems as well as presentation strategies. Below are just a few of the important curriculum standards that will be covered in this project:

  • Modeling (CCSS).
  • Integrating and presenting knowledge and ideas (CCSS).
  • Creativity and Innovation (ISTE Standards for Students).
  • Communication and Collaboration (ISTE Standards for Students).
  • Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Decision Making (ISTE Standards for Students).
  • Research and Information Fluency (ISTE Standards for Students).
  • Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility (ISTE Standards).


All K-5 Castlebay students will be participating in and preparing for the Invention Convention in varying degrees.  Students may team up with one partner student on their idea/invention.  Teams are limited to two people only.

  • K-5th students participated in Stage 1: In the Introduction phase beginning in September, K-5th Grade students learn about inventors and their inventions and are introduced to the invention process in the classroom. Beginning in September your child began following a step-by-step process to invent a new product or develop a new method for solving a problem that s/he identifies in his or her life, or your family or the community.
  • K-5th students participate in Stage 2: In the problem phase students search for problems in their lives/environment that they can create an invention for. In November Kindergarten discussed invention problems in class and grades 1 through 5 sent students home with a problem log to help record problems around them that need to be solved. Your child may have asked if you have a need for something that will help you solve a problem. Your interest and encouragement is appreciated to make the inventing process a fun learning experience for your child.  The log was due on December 2, 2019.  If  your child has not already turned it into their teacher please have him/her do so as soon as possible. All Kindergarten through 5th grade students are required to participating in Stage 2.
  • 2nd-5th students participate in Stage 3: In the Research phase beginning December 20, 2019, students decide on an invention and practice important research skills by completing an Invention log that guides their investigating on the feasibility of their invention idea.  Once your child has settled on an idea and researched it to make sure that the idea has not been used before, an Intent to Invent form will be completed in class and brought home for your signature.  Your child can then begin the planning stage as well as begin keeping his/her Invention Log.  All students MUST document their work in the four different kinds of research listed below:
    • Complete a Google search on the idea/invention
    • Complete a patent search on the idea/invention ( )
    • Complete an expert search on the idea/invention (Parents are encouraged to volunteer their expertise by completing our expert form on our school website under the “Parent’s Corner” tab)
    • Complete consumer research on their idea/invention  (visit a store where similar inventions/products may be sold to investigate the invention’s potential availability on the market)


  • 2nd-5th students participate in Stage 4: In the Design and Build phase, students begin building or making their project  As your child begins the actual process of inventing, your continued interest and encouragement will be helpful. Discuss the progress he or she is making and any problems that are encountered. Remind your child that although inventors often experience failure along the way, they remain persistent and keep trying and thinking of new ideas to solve a problem. It is important that your young inventor uses the Invention Log to document his/her inventing process as it unfolds.
  • 2nd-5th students participate in Stage 5:  In the Presentation phase beginning February 10th  students should begin creating and scripting a 4-minute presentation on their invention.   They will present to parent judges during the 6th and final phase.
  • 2nd-5th students participate in Stage 6:  In the Final judging phase beginning February 24th through March 6th,  each student's entry and presentation will be judged, as will the student's knowledge of his or her invention, and a Certificate will be awarded to each participant.  All finalists are encouraged to enter the state competition.


You are invited to attend your class’ Invention Convention' showcase, which will begin the last week of February.

We know your child will enjoy and benefit from this experience in scientific problem solving and ask that you encourage your child throughout their inventive effort. This student project is an important integration of CCSS, STEAM and ISTE standards and your support and cooperation in helping your child complete this project is greatly appreciated.   We will continue to update you as the program progresses.
